There is old hymn called "Standing on the Promises." But it's hard to stand on promises that you don't know exist. We must focus on Christ, and set His Word as our foundation. Only then can we endure the storms that are most certainly on their way.
History can help us see the Bible as not just words on a page, but as evidence of real events and people that have walked the earth. The words of the Bible testify to their experiences and how the Gospel was real to them and shows that the Gospel has been true and stood the test of time in a tangible and real way.

It seems as if most Christians would rather be spoon-fed by a pastor on Sunday than to have to read the Bible for themselves on a regular basis.
A century after the Down Grade Controversy, and here we stand in the exact same situation. Churches do not value doctrine, and pastors question their own teaching, leading their members to do the same. We are now facing a second Down Grade Controversy. Or, perhaps it never left.
